Paper Airplane Trail

TL;DR
Distance: 1 miles
Type: Out and Back
Time: 1 Hour
Difficulty: Easy
Rating: 5 stars

I went on a vacation to Powder Mountain in Utah with my family and of course we took the 4Runner because it has the 3 rows and hold a lot of storage because of my Thule Box on the top. Threw all the bags up there and headed to Utah. Once we got there we had to find some hiking trails. We found one just a few hundred feet from out parking lot that had some of the best views I have seen on a hike anywhere. We found Paper Airplane Trail.

Starting point of trail right off the road.

First thing you need to know is there is no parking near the actual trail head. But on the way up to the trail you will go up N. Powder Ridge Road. When you get to the turn for Powder Ridge Resort then turn left into there and park as soon as you pull in. Just walk up the road to the top and down Horizon Run Rd. for a bit and you will see the trail start off the the right. That is the shot above.

This trail is beautiful and was constantly changing every few hundred feet. This made the trail fun and exciting. The payoff is rewarding. Here are some shots of the beginning of the trail.

We went in the beginning of July and the flowers were in full bloom everywhere. Once you get down the trail a while you run into a wooden deck built into some trees that gives you a view of whats to come. You can see the big paper airplane off in the distance that your hiking too.

Nice wooden deck.
Would be nice if they added some chairs here.
You can see the airplane laying in the forest.

The next part was a lot of tall trees. I think they were aspen trees but not sure as I’m not from Utah. There were some spits in the trail off to other trails if you wanted a longer trail.

After you get through this point it starts to open up and give you a glimpse of what you are about to see.

It really starts to open up now and you can start to see the through the mountain range off in the distance and see the great salt lake and the upper part of Salt Lake City. After this you get the payoff of the hike. Seeing a huge metal paper airplane sitting on the side of a mountain. Its pretty cool.

Now you can turn around and go back up the trail and finish your hike. But we found another trail to follow and did it. Not sure what the name was but its off to the east from the airplane. I will just leave the rest of the photos for you to see of that part of the trail. We didn’t finish it. The GPS trail below reflects everything we walked, not the actual route of just the Airplane Trail. Please note all the flowers in bloom next to the tail and the views. Awesome hike.
