Sugarloaf Mountain Trail is a wonderful trail located just off of Switzerland Trail in Roosevelt National Forrest near Boulder Colorado. It is pretty easy to get to. Just head up Boulder Canyon and turn off of 122 Sugarloaf Rd and head up that until you get to Sugarloaf Mountain road and take a right. Follow that and you will end up in a large dirt parking lot where you can actually camp in some spots and get to the trail. You can also get to this spot by starting out just taking the Switzerland Trail from Peak to Peak highway 72 and then 120J Switzerland Trail.
The trail is not super noticeable from the parking lot. But if you headed up Sugarloaf Mountain road then it is just to your right as you pull into the parking area. Find a spot and check out the rules posted on the sign. Dogs are welcome on a leash. This trail is pretty kid friendly as its a lot of small rocks to climb up and most kids like that better than a flat trail. I didn’t get pictures on the actual trail for some reason. I’ll go back and get some when I hit Switzerland Trail again some day. The trail just goes up and up. Starts out at around 8452 feet and you end up around 8917 feet. Here are some photos about a 4th of the way up.
When you get about half way up you are met with a bench to rest on. This bench has some amazing views to check out while you rest.
The rest of the trail is above the trees and you are basically hiking up around Sugarloaf Mountain until you get to the very top. Once you get to the top it is almost a 360 degree view of the surrounding area. You can even see Boulder off in the distance.
Once you get to the top you just turn around and head back down. Going back down is a lot easier as its all downhill. Some goof hiking shoes with some grip would help with this trail because of the decline and loose rocks it can become slippery in areas. Please watch your kids at the top as there is some decent drop offs to the one side. And of course as always I used the 4Runner to get me there. Thanks for reading and happy hiking!
